In 1971, The Nation Abandoned Us

But… We Have Not Abandoned our Nation.

“Your Mission Is To Bring Back the Head of Kim Il-Sung!”

Kang In-chan (Sol Kyung-gu), whose father was a defector to North Korea, became the victim of the law of implication by relation, and thus has never been treated as a proper human being in Korean society. He has fallen into a life of crime, and finally is imprisoned for attempted murder. One soldier approaches In-chan and tells him a cryptic message, “Can you take this knife for your country?” The next moment, In-chan finds himself dragged to the scaffolding… a punishment utterly incommensurate to his crime. However, instead of facing the hangman’s noose, he is shipped off on a ferryboat leaving the Inchon harbor, joined by other grimy men, including Sang-pil (Jung Jae-young), Chin-seok (Kang Seong-jin), Won-hee (Im Won-hee), and Keun-jae (Kang Shin-il). These were the 31 men, forcibly recruited by the intelligence agency, to be stationed at Silmido, a no-man’s island off the western coast of the Republic of Korea. The year was 1968.

The 31 trainees, their heads shaved and given soldier’s uniforms, not knowing why they were there, are put under the command of Sub-lieutenant Kim Jae-hyeon (Ahn Sung-ki). With Kim’s declaration, “Your mission is to infiltrate the Premier’s Residence in North Korea, and bring back Kim Il-sung’s head!” the inhuman, infernal training program commences, under the supervision of the cool Sergeant Jo (Hur Jun-ho). The trainees, without ranks and attachments, are nicknamed “684 Premier Residence Destruction Troops,” and the enlisted soldiers are given the duties of surveillance and training… Their slogan: “Those who lag behind will be killed. If caught, blow yourselves up!” In Silmido, there were no human beings, only those living machines devoted to the single-minded purpose of assassinating Kim Il-sung…
